Oppo, I really need to tell my managers one of these day "there's too much snow, I'm working from home today!" Ugh...
The issue is, I can look out my window, see 3 inches of snow and figure "I can drive through that". I'm not saying I'm an amazing driver, I just know the extent of my abilities....which I like to keep pushing any chance I get.
And it doesn't help that I have a "honest Abe-like" personality. If I think I can drive through the snow and ice, I will do it. I can gauge if I can or can't, and i have never said no yet.
I guess this just irks me a bit because I live 40 minute away, and people who are 10 minutes say they can't come in, -_-.
At least I can take pleasure in knowing that I've improved my driving skills a bit.

After noting the "snow" in your picture, I am wondering if and when any real snow will show up.

I've ridden a bicycle on these tyres in more snow than that.
Cant believe people are saying they can't make it in.

Peoples' level of panic over snow is hilarious. Every time there's snow on the ground in the morning half our team calls off. The biggest overnight snow we've had this season so far has been about 4 inches, and on that day the highways were so deserted you'd think it was a holiday.
Here at the dealership, everyone driving company demos panicked and took an SUV home the second the first flake was forecast. I've been driving FWD cars all season and never even come close to having any difficulty. I mean... seriously, it's just a little snow FFS!

Ha, we just got word we're gonna get 3" and a layer of ice later today. but you're right, this isn't much s is. Apparently it's enough to cause make cars fly off the hwy though...

I know cities have a lot of slush on the roads, but it is still possible to drive on it. Just don't mash the accelerator.

Yeah just takes careful driving.

My thoughts exactly. If anything, it's a new challenge I can take on

The only time I haven't gone into work because of snow was a couple of years back when we had a civil warning in effect in Milwaukee, I would have totally gone into work but after shoveling for 2 hours I was kinda stanking and needed a nap.

I moved to the Chicagoland area after 25 years of living in Arizona. I've only owned RWD cars here so far ('05 4Runner SR5 and a '13 FR-S), and I have had essentially zero issues driving in two of the worst winters they have seen in quite awhile. In fact, on Super Bowl Sunday we had one of the worst blizzards we've had all year; I went driving for fun with some people from my car club. People really need to learn how to drive in the snow, it's not that difficult (like at all). haha

The only difficulties of winter driving I have found are black ice, and turns. For turns you just slow down more than usually. Black ice...you can't predict it so if it happens, it happens.

See, I still have to work if I can't make it. The only times I was physically unable to come to work was because my car wouldn't start. It was too cold.

Agreed, black ice is something you can't really plan for. However, if people were taught how to control their vehicles in a spin, like many other countries require in order to get your license, they would probably do quite a bit better. But in a case like yours above (3 inches of new snow) you likely won't be hitting any black ice. Those people who are 10 minutes away and calling out were just looking for an excuse. I hope your boss recognizes your dedication!

Ha, he admires that I'm always on time for meetings, but I'm pretty sure that's it *sigh*.

I had that happen last year, I had already booked the day off work, my battery died so i had to change that out in minus 30 degree weather.

Snow tires makes driving in the snow fun. I think many people that become over-worried from the snow don't understand that there is even more than one type of tire. Sure the tires aren't necessary to get home safely, but it sure makes it much less of a hassle. But it also helps that any time it snows enough here, we get a paid day off work anyways (or a delayed opening)

Yeah, don't have the snow tires, :/. When I was about to get them, I realized my all-seasons were more dead than I originally thought, so I just got new all-seasons.
I've also heard FWD doesn't need snow tires. But I have no idea i just know that snow tires help get a better grip on the snow.

Yep, I had to switch around vacation time so I could get my car to work. Every week I need to put in x amount of hours, which proves difficult sometimes...

Yeah, man, I know what you mean.

Yes, you and I, we are the same. We were born in the snow, molded by it....

A good set of all seasons is fine for the light stuff. It's a bigger problem to have bald tires. Like I said, it's not necessary to use snows for most cars. Driver input is surely more important. Lightweight RWD is certainly a time when snow tires come in handy. I had enough trouble in the rain with my all seasons lol.

My car has a 6" ground clearance, anything taller I'd probably give up, lol. Yeah, three of the four tires were almost bald, so they had to be replaced.

Where abouts do you live? I live in eastern canada, and there is nothing we like more than making fun of people like southern neighbours who can't deal with snow. Charlottetown did have a snow day this year though. They got 2.5 feet!!! of snow the previous night.

It's ok, if the company starts doing badly and costs need to be cut, you won't be the first out, you'll be the last. You're building your job security!!!

....I hope that is true. This past January, the company wasn't doing too hot. The division I'm in was down 8% in revenue. Outside sources were saying that 46% of the employees might be laid off.
Well, as far as I heard, no one at my center got laid off, they just increased our work hours. Instead of 40 hrs a week, I'm working 44. It might not seem like much, but adding on my commute, I leave at 7:30am and return at 6:30pm.
Sometimes, I hate being an adult.... :(
![]() 03/04/2015 at 08:34 |

Well if they increased your hours then someone somewhere got laid off. Be glad it was not you!!
I usually work 6:30am-4, so about 9.5 hours per day although I take breaks and stuff. Being an adult can be tough haha, but I am sure the extra money doesn't go amiss.

*sigh* I'm salary so I get paid the same. I'm a computer developer who gets sourced to other companies. So the other companies are essentially paying for my time. But since theres no pay increase, it's like I'm working for free.
I think the revenue was down so much last year was because there were too many people on the bench, aka not on a project. So my conpany was footing there salary. I can't prove it, but it's my theory.

I am also salary. Which was nice when I had to take 10 days off for knee surgery. Not so nice when you put in extra hours every day of the week! Oh well.

Thanks for talking though, I feel a bit better knowing I'm not the only one who goes through all this, :).

Pittsburgh.
The ridiculous thing is, we get a fair bit of snow every year. We don't get multiple feet at a time but 3-6 inches in a day is a very common occurrence, so common that I even stop paying attention to the amounts after we get a couple months into winter. You'd think people would get used to it.

Cheers mate. Even here in the far norths of Canada the weather is improving. Soon winter will be on it's way.

Lol. I thought Pittsburgh knew how to winter. Guess not.
